A break from taxes

Residents who have delayed purchases may want to consider finally making them on Friday and Saturday during the Louisiana Sales Tax Holiday when things will be slightly less expensive.
According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue website, the sales tax holiday provides an exemption from state sales tax on the first $2,500 of the purchase price of most individual items of personal property for non-business use.
If the price of an item exceeds $2,500, state sales tax will be added on the portion above that amount.

Bedford announces run for District 11 seat

Lincoln Parish native Rory L. Bedford has announced his candidacy for the Louisiana House of Representatives District 11 seat representing Bienville, Claiborne and Lincoln parishes.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Rick Gallot, D-Grambling, who is running for the Senate this fall.

City cleans up downtown sewage system

Work to cause traffic delays on Trenton Street for weeks

The city of Ruston could see a lot of digging, some lost parking spots downtown and slowed traffic on Trenton Street in the next few months.
These issues will be the result of the replacement and inner resurfacing of old sewer lines, which city Water and Sewer Operations Manager Troy Whitman said need to be done before any more work is completed on the downtown streetscape project.

LRTA objects to insurance privatization

The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association is opposed to the sale/privatization of the Office of Group Benefits. Despite testimony before the Senate Committee on retirement and the Senate Committee on insurance during the recent legislative session indicating the sale/privatization of the Office of Group Benefits is not a good idea, Gov. Jindal and Commissioner Rainwater push onward to force this proposal.

Attempted burglary prompts concern

On Wednesday, I awoke to the sound of breaking glass coming from the downstairs area of my house on East Colorado Avenue. At first, I wasn’t terribly alarmed, thinking that maybe a glass had fallen in the sink. But moments later I heard the sound again along with movement in the dining room area.

Dear EarthTalk: Why can’t plastics of all types, instead of being initially sorted, simply be melted together to be separated later? It must be a monumental and error-prone task to separate truckloads of plastics.

I remember how I learned to swim. Yes, I took swimming lessons and yes, Daddy worked with me and my younger brother. Mom, never having learned to swim, was deathly afraid of water and could not look, most of the time, when we would jump in the motel pool during our vacation.
