Pat and Joe Dickson and Kay and Tom Church (hosts for the Caney Lake Sams Campout) said, “Hurry in, out of the storm, with your brown bag lunch and come into the meeting room.”
This was at the Pavilion RV Park in West Monroe on Jan. 25-28. Once inside, everything was cozy and warm while the storm did its “thing” outside.

Parish teams ranked high

Choudrant boys, Dubach girls lead way in poll

Choudrant High’s boys and Dubach High’s girls are becoming locked in on Top 10 rankings for state teams in classes B/C.
The Lady Hornets are No. 6 and the Aggies are No. 9 in the weekly Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll announced on Monday afternoon.
Both Lincoln Parish teams occupied the same positions last week in the rankings that are voted on by an 11-member statewide media panel.

So over the weekend, I was at a college news media conference and there was only one thing that people kept talking about and that was Jeremy Lin.
This name was all over sports pages from the USA Today to the web and if he keeps up his performance, it could become a household name. For those wondering who he is, Lin is a professional basketball player for the New York Knicks and he had the best game of his short career.

Bicknell joins Chiefs’ staff

Ex-Tech head coach will direct offensive linemen

Former Louisiana Tech University head football coach Jack Bicknell, Jr., is changing addresses in the National Football League.
After serving the past three years of the staff of the recently crowned Super Bowl champion New York Giants, Bicknell was announced Tuesday afternoon as the new offensive line coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Unconfirmed reports had circulated in New York earlier in the day on the move, but were then officially announced by both the Giants and Chiefs late Tuesday afternoon.

Tech softballers begin home slate

Head Coach Sarah Dawson has received a quick, “impact statement” for her 2012 Louisiana Tech University softball team.
How about four solid games in last weekend’s LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, where Tech had a deceiving 1-3 record.
In addition to winning 4-2 over Penn State, the Lady Techsters pushed Big 10 toughie Michigan to the brink of defeats before being edged 5-4 and 7-6.

Cedar Creek girls, New Living Word boys gain wins

Cedar Creek High’s girls reached the conveted 20-win plateau on Tuesday night with a 42-32 victory over Choudrant High.
The Lady Cougars (20-8) featured the scoring of Ruby Richie with 18 points, Morgan Lolley with 11 points, Victoria Pardue with seven points and Blair Bennett with six points.
Pardue also ahd six rebounds and Richie came through with four boards and Bennett and Lolley had three rebounds each.

Money lessons to benefit all

The most recent national budget, which was released earlier this week, shows that even our government has lost sight of the simple practice of not spending more money than it has.
Luckily, last week local high-school seniors were given a reality check when it comes to personal finances. United Way of Northeast Louisiana, in conjunction with Lincoln ACHIEVE and many other community organizations, organized the first ever parishwide Dollars and Sense Reality Fair.

Take a break from technology

There is absolutely nothing to do in Martin, Tenn.
At least not when I went there for a journalism conference this past weekend held at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
The town is in northern Tennessee right next to the Kentucky border, and aside from three hotels, a few eating places and the university, there was not a whole lot to choose from.

The Health Hut continues to give

All Leonel Lacayo wants is for small businesses to accept the gift he wishes to give them.
Lacayo, a Ruston gastroenterologist who’s the founder and medical director of The Health Hut, a mobile clinic that provides free care to the parish’s uninsured, wants to take that free service a step further. He’s proposing a wellness program for small businesses that don’t offer health insurance to their employees.
