Bayou Dorcheat: Trip back in time

I still remember my first job out of college long years ago. I was hired to teach school in a town in Webster Parish with a funny sounding name, Shongaloo.
I enjoyed my one-year stay in this little hamlet, making friends, some of whom I still keep in contact with today. Not only was it fun to impart knowledge to kids just a few years younger than I, ponds in the area provided some good fishing and there were plenty of squirrels to chase on Indian Creek.

Tech radio grid show set Monday

Following their game against New Mexico State on Saturday night, Louisiana Tech University Head Coach Sonny Dykes will join Dave Nitz Monday night for Hill Oil’s Inside Bulldog Football at 5:30 p.m. at the Dawghouse Sports Grill in Ruston.

Ex-Techsters to be honored at alumni event

A pair of former Louisiana Tech Lady Techster basketball players will be honored during homecoming weekend as Brooke Lassiter Stoehr and Debbie Primeaux Williamson are two of eight individuals that will be recognized during the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon.

Remembering a wedding

This is a special day for me. I was married to my young lieutenant on a Saturday, Oct. 28, 1944, at 6 p.m. Can it have been so long ago? We had the full military procedure with crossed swords, etc., with a reception afterward at the officers’ club. My father, an army chaplain at Fort Wolters Army base, officiated.

A lifetime full of friendships

Friendship is one of the most beautiful gifts on earth. Grace Tirado, 72, of Ruston can surely agree with this statement. She has had the same loyal companions since junior high school.
When asked how her recent weekend went, Tirado replied, “My girlfriend said it was like Christmas, the whole family was together.”

American Legion Post hosts ‘Women of Distinction Tea’

On Sept. 22 the American Legion Post 593 Auxiliary of Grambling hosted its inaugural Women of Distinction Tea and Membership Drive in the fellowship hall of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Grambling.
Eight women from the area were honored. Louise Townsend, retired teacher from Bienville Parish; Swedie Rutledge, retired Grambling professor of home economics; Eula Woodard, gifted retired professional seamstress and Grambling State University instructor; Valena Lane, former educator and Grambling housing authority executive director; Hazel Douglas, a former Grambling Lady Tiger basketball player and educator; Robertine Malone and Essie Howard were all a part of this inaugural class of distinguished women from the area.

Ruston Civic Symphony Society celebrates 50 years

Ruston was the first town of its size in Louisiana to organize and completely support a permanent symphony orchestra. A group of music lovers, including civic leaders and Louisiana Tech University faculty members, joined together to bring to the area music by a resident symphony orchestra, making Ruston a cultural pace-setter.

Lewis, Grafton to wed in November ceremony

Anthony and Elishia Lewis, of Choudrant, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Chelsy Lewis, to Benjamin Grafton, also of Choudrant.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Wilda Doyle, of Choudrant, the late Glenn Doyle, Nathan Lewis, of Avinger, Texas, the late Rhonda Lewis and John and Vickie Godina, of Monroe. She is a 2010 graduate of Choudrant High School and attended Northern Louisiana Technical College. She is currently self-employed.

Morrow, Weeks to unite in matrimony

Kenneth and Tina Morrow, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Ashley Alana Morrow, to Ty Waynon Weeks, of Goldonna.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Velma C. Johnson, the late Charlie Johnson and the late Resse and Molly Morrow. She is a 2000 graduate of Ruston High School, attended Louisiana Tech University and is employed with Dr. Bobby Ensminger.
