Experimenting with new things in old age

Let me say, I am astounded. Today is my 91st birthday. It makes me tired to think about it. Just joking. It’s really quite wonderful to still be around and observe all that goes on around me without having to get too involved. I play up the old, helpless bit pretty good too.
I’m my usual busy self with a variety of activities that keep me hopping. But I don’t hop quite so high these days. I sat down to read the paper yesterday and woke up an hour later. That’s a new wrinkle, but I’ve adjusted to all the changes and have decided when such things happen I’ll just be thankful for the nap, and that I woke up.

Club receives grant

The Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana recently received a $3,000 grant from Louisiana Insurance Services, Inc. through their Safeco Insurance Agent Giving Program.
Paul Jones, regional manager for Louisiana Insurance, said that since Club board member and Safeco agent Donna Ewing submitted the grant proposal in 2010 the Boys and Girls Club was eligible to receive the grant.

Bankers warn of scam

Local bankers are asking residents to keep an eye out or they might be taken in by the “Gameover” scam.
According to the National Consumer Protection Week website, a campaign that works to educate consumers about how to stay safe from scams and other malicious activities, “Gameover” is a phishing scam that targets victims’ bank accounts.

Techsters ready to ‘Pack the House’

Fans of Louisiana Tech University’s basketball program could be on a big ride Saturday.
And not just in showing their support for the Lady Techsters.
Accentuating the annual “Pack the House Challenge” for the Techsters will be a fair theme featuring ferris wheels, roller coasters, a mirror maze and numerous other attractions prior to the 7 p.m. tipoff against Fresno State University.
In the challenge, Tech is competing in an attendance promotion event against all schools in the WAC.

Man allegedly robbed the blind

On Wednesday, a student with the Louisiana Center for the Blind reported he was the victim of a robbery while walking on Monroe Street near the downtown area. 
Officers with the Ruston Police Department responded and subsequent to a brief investigation, Cortez Russell, 23, 120 Calvin Street, was arrested at his residence and charged with purse snatching and simple robbery. 
“When officers responded to the call of the robbery it appeared Russell had physically taken the victim’s wallet and phone,” RPD Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Parker said. “The investigators followed up on several different leads.”

St. Jude ‘Run for Hope’ offered by Zeta Rho chapter of ESA

A St. Jude 5-K “Run for Hope” is set for March 10 at Choudrant’s Squire Creek Country Club by the Zeta Rho chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International, a women’s service organization.
A One-Mile Fun Run will also be offered at the event.
Registration and packet pick-up is scheduled for 7-8 a.m.; the One-Mile Fun Run, 8 a.m.; and the 5-K Run, 8:30 a.m.

Coffeehouse displays artist’s photography

The North Central Louisiana Arts Council and Crescent City Coffeehouse will feature artist Bess Bieluczyk’s work during the months of February and March. An opening reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday for the show titled, “Assembling Intimacy.”
Bieluczyk’s digital photography focuses on “dealing with the pleasures and anxieties of domestic life.”

Roaf: ‘Nervous’ about Hall

William Roaf will be the first to admit it: he’s just a little nervous over the Saturday announcement of who makes the 2012 induction class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“Yes, I am nervous,” Roaf told the Ruston Daily Leader earlier this week. “Anyone who says they aren’t would not be telling the truth.”
The nervousness is, for sure, warranted.

Defending WAC champs stop Nevada

Jasmine Bendolph: the modern day version of Teresa Weatherspoon?
Well, the senior point guard did a convincing imitation of her head coach, ex-Louisiana Tech University star and Hall of Famer Teresa Weatherspoon, in a 77-63 Western Athletic Conference victory over Nevada at the Thomas Assembly Center on Thursday night.
Bendolph registered the third double double of her career with a 12-point and career-high 15 assists to lead a key league win for the Lady Techsters (11-10, 4-2).
