Choudrant’s Hogan receives top honor

Choudrant High alumna Katie Hogan, daughter of Charles and Myra Hogan, has been chosen as a 2012 Presidential Scholar.
Hogan is one of 141 outstanding American high school seniors that have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community. The U.S. Presidential Scholars will be honored in 
Washington D.C., from June 16-19.

Building a better city

Residents gather to glimpse Ruston 21 vision

A small crowd of community leaders and local residents gathered at the Ruston Civic Center on Tuesday to learn a little more about changes on the horizon for the city.
As part of Ruston 21, the city’s comprehensive plan for the future, city staff are working with consultant Clearzoning to formulate a new zoning code. On Tuesday, residents received a glimpse of some goals behind the updated code, which is expected to be implemented later this year.

Residents dispose of hazardous waste

When Ruston resident Jan Clifton usually wants to get rid of some old paint, random garden and household sprays or fluorescent lightbulbs, she said she either throws them in the trash or waits for someone to claim them.
“I know that there are some things in these materials that are dangerous, but I just don’t have anywhere else to put them sometimes,” she said. “It leaves me feeling uneasy when I do.”

New Tech named national demonstration site again

It’s a repeat for New Tech @ Ruston.
The New Tech Network has announced that the Ruston High School program has been named an official demonstration site and exemplary school for the second consecutive year. This designation acknowledges the high level of implementation of key New Tech components including project-based learning, teaching and assessing 21st Century skills, technology use in the classroom and the unique culture that empowers students.

Rotary awards middle grade students

The Lincoln Rotary Club proudly announced the recipients of its annual Middle Grades Student of the Year Awards. Each student was honored at the May 4 luncheon and presented an award of achievement by club President Walter Scriber and Event Coordinator Josh Perot. Each awardee has maintained excellent grades, been active in extracurricular activities and community service, and served as a leader on their respective school campus.

Third grader names Monroe surgical robot

Wall-E, Leo and Shot Bot: These were just a few names submitted in the “Name Our Robot” contest.
Both Ouachita Parish Schools and Monroe City Schools, along with Cedar Creek School, participated in the contest. More than 1,300 names were submitted.
The winning name was revealed at Community Day on May 1 at Monroe Surgical Hospital.
Community members were invited to tour the facility and see the new robot.

Three inducted into Tech Hall of Alumni

Three Louisiana Tech alumni received the Tower Medallion award and were therefore inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni at commencement on Saturday.
Dr. Bobby Lyle and Lucius and Mildred McGehee were presented the award based on their achievement, community service and their dedication to the university.
