Service celebrating the life of George Valentine Evanoff will be held on Friday December 20, 2013 at 11 AM in the Chapel at Rose- Neath Marshall Street. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery St. Vincent. The family will receive friends at 10 AM prior to the service. George was born August 12, 1924 and passed away on December 18, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Slavka Evanoff and wife Syble. Left to cherish his memory is his son Dr. George V. Evanoff, Jr.

Marines collect toys

On Saturday, the United States Marine Corps finished up their Toys for Tots drive, which began Nov. 20.
Anthony Shoemake, Toys for Tots coordinator for the Marines, said Ruston did a great job in collecting toys for youngsters for the holidays.
“We have currently raised $5,862, which we will, in turn, use to purchase more toys for the community,” Shoemake said. “In total, we collected over 600 toys for the City of Ruston.”
Shoemake said that, given the size of the need and the population, Ruston exceeded the goal for this year.

Copeland named as president

Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Interim President Judy Copeland has been named president.
In May 2013 past president Scott Terry resigned and Copeland, who had been the office manager since 2005, was asked to serve as interim as the board took some time to review the organization’s structure and do some long-range planning.
“Judy has great leadership skills and eight year’s experience with our chamber,” Aaron Paul said. “She’ll do a great job as interim president,” and at Tuesday’s board meeting the board of directors accepted Paul’s recommendation to bring her on permanently.

Special meeting set for Grambling

As discussed at the Dec. 5 Grambling City Council Meeting, a special called meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
This meeting has been called for the purpose of hearing public comments on ordinances that were introduced Dec. 5.
Ordinances that will be discussed include:
• Ordinance No. 0125013-1 — Ordinance adopting the proposed budget of revenue and expenditures for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1, 2014, and ending Dec. 31, 2014, for the City of Grambling.

Man arrested on bank fraud charges

At 11:02 a.m. Tuesday, the Ruston Police Department arrested a man on charges of bank fraud.
Clint Williams, public information officer for RPD, said a local bank contacted RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division in regards to fraud in October 2013.

Dubach appoints new commissioner

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, the town of Dubach met for their regular monthly meeting during which they appointed Dennis Byrnes as the 2014 commissioner for the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 Board of Commissioners.
“Sonny Barnett asked to be taken off (the list for appointment),” Bob Jensen, mayor for the town of Dubach, said. “But Dennis Byrnes did agree to accept (the appointment).”
Alderman Robert “Skeeter” Colvin motioned to appoint Byrnes as commissioner for LPFD’s Board of Commissioners, and Alderman Davey Powell seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Louisiana Tech University’s Department of Theatre will dedicate the second show of its upcoming production, “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” by Michele L. Vacca, to the youth of the community by engaging them both educationally and actively.

Children able to call on Santa

Ho, Ho, Ho! Ruston Parks and Recreation has again secured a line directly from the North Pole to North Louisiana.
The North Pole has been bustling with activity and the elves are busy building toys and getting the sleigh ready for the big night! But Santa Claus is not too busy to take a few minutes to leave daily messages on the RPAR Santa Hotline that began last Friday after his appearance in the parade.

$20K awarded by NWLAMG

The Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners are proud to announce this year’s recipients of their community grants. NWLAMG awards grants to organizations and municipalities that support beautification and horticultural education within the community. Of particular interest are projects that make a difference in the community, that are sustainable, and involve collaboration among local organizations.
The NWLA Master Gardeners awarded a total of $20,000. The winners of the community grant program are:

Club News: Local club fills gift bags

Culture Guild members Donna White, Lou Taylor, Anne Kilpatrick and Anita Gray fill Christmas gift bags distributed to the homebound. The Lincoln Parish Library Outreach Services bookmobile delivers the bags on their regular rounds in the area.
