Memorial services for Joyce Woody, 84 of Ruston, LA will be held at December 14, 2013, 2pm at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Hulen Warren officiating. Burial will follow services at Pecan Grove Cemetery in the Hilly, LA community under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Ruston, LA. Visitation will be December 14, 2013, 1pm at the church prior to the service. Born and raised in Hilly, Louisiana, she graduated from Ruston High School. Joyce then went to Shreveport and received her diploma in Nursing from Highland Hospital.

Russ-Town Band to perform

The annual Russ-Town Band Christmas Concert is set to take the stage of the Dixie Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The concert is the band’s gift to the community plus a benefit for Toys for Tots and Christian Community Action of Lincoln Parish. The event is free with donations of canned food items, new toys and/or cash accepted at the door.
In their 20th concert season, conductor Lawrence Gibbs said though they have played in other venues the Dixie will forever be home for the band.
“We formed the group in 1994 and have been playing at the Dixie ever since,” he said.

UPPJ denies request from DA

District Attorney Bob Levy’s request for a substantial increase in funding for his office from the Union Parish Police Jury was rejected during the police jury’s regular meeting Dec. 3.
Levy requested $155,000 in additional annual payments beginning in 2014 on top of the $120,000 the UPPJ currently pays to help fund the 3rd Judicial District office, which represents Lincoln and Union parishes.

Opera music to be performed

The Louisiana Tech University Department of Music will host an Opera Workshop Performance from 7:30 – 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Director of the Opera Workshop Lisa Maxedon said the workshop has been giving performances for more than 20 years.
“Past directors have been David Wylie and Shuman Yang,” she said. “There will be two performances: Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and (another) Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.”
Both performances will be held in the small Recital Hall in Howard Center. Admission to the performance is free to the public.

GSU: School won’t lose access to financial aid

GRAMBLING (AP) — Grambling State University will continue to have access to federal financial aid programs and is working to fix oversight issues cited this week by the state Legislative Auditor, a school official said Tuesday.
According to an audit released Monday, Grambling failed to return nearly $15,000 in aid within an allotted time period that went to eight students who dropped out in the last year.
Consequences for violating the rule include sanctions or termination of access to federal aid programs.

RHS Cheerleaders are state champs again

Ruston High cheerleaders brought home two state championships this weekend from the LHSAA State Cheerleading Championship. They won the state title in Large Varsity Non-Tumbling Performance and in Varsity Game Time Fight Song. They were named state runner up in Timeout Cheer and received fourth place in the Timeout Dance. They are now preparing to compete at NCA Nationals.

Buddy Ball gives all a chance to grow and learn

Just over a year ago, a small group of Ruston residents got together to start a softball league for special-needs youngsters. Organizers didn’t know how many kids would sign up.
But they did know that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and grow by participating in team sports.
