Downsville Charter receives a ‘B’ from the state

It’s a “B” and a “Top Gain School” for The Downsville Charter School.
There is reason for celebration in Downsville. The Louisiana Department of Education has awarded Downsville Charter School a letter grade of “B,” which represents an extraordinary improvement from nearly a “D” school to a solid “B.” This higher rating is a strong indication of the quality of education provided at DCS. Additionally, the school has been named a “Top Gain School” because the school performance score has increased 16.8 points from last year.

Campbell, Letendre Samsung finalists

Lincoln Parish educators have captured two of the five State Finalist honors in the national Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. Simsboro High School science teacher Chris Campbell and New Tech @ Ruston Animation and Visual Effects instructor Catherine Letendre were selected among more than 2,300 applications submitted to advance in the competition.

LSMSA: Seniors visit Centenary College

Twenty seniors from the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts were invited to visit Centenary College in Shreveport Nov. 10-11. Students were able to sit in on classes, spend the night in a residence hall and tour the campus. Pictured are those that attended.

Registration now open for Virtual School

in

Students from across the state can register now through Jan. 15, for the Virtual School at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.
Semester block courses available starting in the spring include Algebra II, anthropology, astronomy, computer applications, computer science I, digital photography, fine arts survey, French I and II, geometry, introduction to business, introduction to financial accounting, introduction to culinary arts, introduction to social media, music appreciation, personal finance, public speaking, social problems I and Spanish I, II and III.

RHS, Creek QBs connect off the field

As both Cedar Creek and Ruston High head into the second round of the prep playoffs, the two teams will have “dualing” quarterbacks just as they have all season long.
And no, not “dueling,” because Class 1A Cedar Creek and Class 5A Ruston don’t play each other in football even though the two schools are situation so close together.
In this case it’s “dualing” because we’re talking about a pair of starting quarterbacks who have been best friends since each childhood.

Bulldogs race past UCA

CONWAY, Ark. — It was home sweet home for Arkansas natives Raheem Appleby and Kenyon McNeil as the duo combined to score 39 points in leading the Bulldogs to a 94-57 win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday night in the Farris Center.
The game-high 21 points from Appleby were particularly special since the junior guard became the 35th Bulldog to reach 1,000 points.

GSU women win at home, G-Men drop game on road

GRAMBLING — Four Lady Tigers scored in double figures Wednesday as the Grambling State Lady Tigers raced to a 92-60 win over Texas College in GSU’s home opener in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Joanna Miller led GSU with 22 points while adding 11 rebounds for her first double double of the season along with six assists and six steals.
Jor Mitchell-Harmel added a 20-point performance for GSU while Victoya Ricks also notched a double double with 17 points and team-high 12 rebounds along with a pair of blocked shots.

Holiday cheer set for Dec. 7 in Choudrant

From 6-8:30 p.m. Dec. 7 the village of Choudrant will be kicking off the Christmas season with Christmas in the Village. This year, the village will be expanding its Christmas in the village by adding vendor booths to the festivities.
Tina Wise, chair for Christmas in the Village, said the idea of adding booth space came from people wanting to sell their homemade goods to the patrons that come to Christmas in the Village.
“We had three or four booths last year,” Wise said. “People liked it so much that we wanted to do more.

Meth lab in Simsboro

At 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested one man on charges of creating a methamphetamine lab in Simsboro.
According to the affidavit, LPNET agents went to 5196 Highway 563 while acting off of an anonymous tip of illegal drug activity. While searching Jeffery Scott Southern, occupant of 5196 Highway 563, agents reportedly found one plastic bag containing methamphetamine. The total weight of the methamphetamine was 9.6 grams.
