Tech preparing for hoops, gridiron doubleheader

in

Louisiana Tech fans will have an opportunity to experience a basketball-football doubleheader Saturday when the Lady Techsters host in-state rival LSU and the Bulldogs welcome Conference USA foe Tulsa.
Teresa Weatherspoon and the Lady Techsters will tipoff against LSU at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center as fans can watch the two most storied women’s programs in the state of Louisiana. The two programs have combined for 49 NCAA Tournament appearances (27 by LA Tech, 22 by LSU) and 15 NCAA Final Fours (10 by Tech, 5 by LSU).

Mr. Roy Gene Hastings

Funeral services for Mr. Roy Gene Hastings, age 69 of Dubach, will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at South Parkway Church in Ruston. Pastor Chris Witt will officiate the service. Graveside services will be held Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Forrest Park Cemetery in Forrest Park, AR. Services are under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ruston.

Neil Fussell, Jr.

Funeral services will be held for Neil Fussell, Jr., 80, at the Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Larry Sellers, officiating. Interment will follow at Rocky Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 405 E. 5th St. on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Mr. Fussell was born Jan. 13, 1933 in Winnsboro to Nerious Oneil Fussell and Georgia Herlong Fussell. He entered into rest Sunday, November 17th at his home following a sudden illness. Mr. Fussell was a retired Supervisor from Dow Chemical with 25 years of service.

Graveside services for Theon McGee, age 95, of Shreveport formerly of Bernice will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Bernice City Cemetery in Bernice LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Officating the service will be Rev. Lamar Skinner.

Local barns open to wedding parties

Residents of Lincoln Parish now have unique venues for their weddings almost all year round — barns.
Charlotte Naff, manager of Shenandoah Stables Productions in Vienna, said this business began by accident.
“We have had so many people ask to have their weddings here, so we decided to let them come on,” Naff said. “We provide the atmosphere and they go with it.”
Naff said barn weddings are for cowgirls who want the country atmosphere.
“It is so much fun to watch,” Naff said. “The people who have their weddings here decorate with love.”

Scouting for food

Local boys help collect items for CCA

Local Boy and Cub Scouts collected an estimated 8,000 pounds of food for Christian Community Action and residents are still able to donate if they missed the scouts.
Charlotte Hood, pack advancement chairman for Pack 59 Cub Scouts, said Scouting for Food is a great cause for which the scouts to be a part.
“Scouting for Food is an excellent cause,” Hood said. “Not only do the boys get the opportunity to assist in giving back to their community, but they also get to witness how generous our community is.”

Get a free jump start to better health

Residents can work off those holiday pounds with one of Bulldawg Nutrition’s many fitness options that are open to the public. Those interested can get a jump-start on their fitness with their six-week weight loss challenge or fit camp for four weeks.
The weight loss challenge begins today with a $25 entry fee. All of the money collected from the entry fee will go to pay out the Top 3 winners. The fitness challenge group will meet at 5:30 p.m. every Monday.

Professionals jump rope into local schools

On Saturday, local elementary school students attended a jump rope workshop at A.E. Phillips, which was taught by The Heart Throbbers Team and The High Velocity Team, jump rope teams from Texas.
Katie Hall said she was so glad to see the sport of jump roping come to Ruston.
“We are hoping to generate enough interest in jump roping to start a club at Ruston Elementary,” Hall said.
“The two teams represented, The Heart Throbbers and The High Velocity, taught the children single rope, partner rope and double dutch skills.”

Brazzel speaks to club

Ruston Fire District Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel recently spoke at the noon meeting of the Ruston Lions Club. Officer Brazzel told the group of the cross training of the fireman within the Ruston Fire Department.
