Vizza vying for top crown

Former Miss Tech competes in Miss America pageant

Two years ago, Lauren Vizza was given the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas for the Miss America Pageant. But that year, she watched with the crowd.
“When I was crowned Miss Monroe, they gave me a trip to the Miss America Pageant. Dailey Joy Foster, Miss Monroe Outstanding Teen, was with me,” Vizza said.
In an effort to motivate her, Dailey took a picture of the stage.

School board OKs refunding plan

Lincoln Parish School Board members elected their 2013 officers and took action that could save almost $50,000 per year during their regular meeting on Tuesday night.
Board President Otha Anders handed his gavel over to Bell to conduct the elections.
District 1 representative Mattie Harrison nominated Anders for the position of president. No other names were brought forward, and Anders was unanimously voted into his ninth term as president of the school board.

Budget cuts, new policies to hurt DART

The Domestic Abuse Resistance Team, along with all other domestic violence service providers throughout the state, is staggering with the impact of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s latest round of mid-year budget cuts. Domestic violence program budgets are being slashed by 21.2 percent, a devastating blow to any budget.
“This cut of more than $63,000 will have immediate impact upon our programs and our services,” says Cathy Ayo. DART executive director. “We will have to eliminate staff positions and services unless we can find some other source of revenue.”

NLMC announces Healthy Woman program advisory council for 2013

Northern Louisiana Medical Center has announced the names of 13 select women who will lead the advisory council for the hospital’s Healthy Woman program.
Healthy Woman will feature a monthly series of free seminars, health fairs, education programs and interactive events focusing on women.

Four teens apprehended in case of stolen motorized shopping cart

Four teens were arrested on felony theft charges on Jan. 9 after allegedly stealing a motorized shopping cart from County Market on Dec. 4.
According to the booking affidavit, the managers of County Market reported the shopping cart stolen.
Upon reviewing video footage taken from security surveillance of the store, four males were reportedly shown attempting to load the motorized shopping cart into a Toyota SUV. However, the cart would not fit into the vehicle.

Preschoolers experience busy December

On Dec. 10 Santa Claus came to visit all of the good boys and girls at our school. Each child got a chance to share his or her Christmas list and pose for a picture with Santa. Santa and Mrs.
Claus surprised each child with a candy cane treat. Santa’s helper was a wonderful volunteer from the Veterans of Foreign War, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW provided candy canes.

Hankins named to British studies advisory board

Jeffery Hankins, an associate professor of history at Louisiana Tech University, is one of the few members of the British Scholar Society, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to Britain’s interactions in the world from the 17th century to the present, to concentrate on British history during the 1600s and 1700s.
“Most scholars write about Great Britain during the 19th century and 20th century,” Hankins said. “I write about after the American colonies split from the British Empire, when the empire really got going in settling other places such as India and China.”
