Tech hoops: tough road foes

It’s regional and in-state showdowns that will mark the return to action for both Tech teams which will have been idle for a week or more by the time they face their opponents this weekend; the Lady Techsters’ most recent appearance was an 85-68 rout over Rice in Ruston on Dec. 21, while two days later, the Bulldogs stumbled at LSU 68-52.
It’s a tough return to the court, too, for both Tech squads.
The combined record of Arkansas’ men and LSU’s women is 21-4; the Razorbacks are 9-3, the top 10 nationally ranked Lady Tigers 12-1.

Resolve to volunteer time to others

In a community of our size where a significant percentage of the population are natives and graduates of local schools, there are former school teachers or out-of-town classmates’ parents who are now residents of local assisted living or nursing home facilities.
Just being remembered by those other than immediate family is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding events of those residents’ daily lives.
However, on a broader scope there are organizations which would welcome the help of more volunteers. These structured opportunities exist in many fields of interest.

At last, thoughts have matured

Other times I have an idea which has been the subject of a great deal of writing, and I am searching to find some new method of treatment. And there are times I have an idea which has never been the subject of any writing at all, and I am searching for an original method of treatment.

Fireworks restrictions to freeze late celebrations

The aldermen passed an ordinance in December 2005 to keep fireworks inside the Dubach town limits legal for those with a permit — but restricted the shooting to certain holidays and times of year.
“In order to shoot fireworks, anybody 18 or over inside the municipality needs to get a permit to shoot on their property,” Rogers said. “It’s up to the parents if they want their children to shoot them, but the adult must fill out the paperwork.”

Walls: a life-saving donation

By the time Springs left the Cowboys in 1985, their wives already were good friends. Eventually, so were their kids. Everyone gets along so well that they’ve taken family vacations together, like the time all eight piled into one Land Cruiser and drove from Dallas to Orlando through a rainstorm so blinding they missed their destination.
Springs is the godfather of Walls’ oldest daughter and Walls received the same honor for Springs’ youngest. And, living up to the old saying that “your family is my family,” Springs recently spoke at the funeral of Walls’ father-in-law.

New Year’s plans spark caution

Lt. Danny Cross with the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1, said the fire department would most likely be called on at least five calls involving fireworks that had gone awry during New Year’s Eve festivities.
“Be extremely careful with fireworks,” Cross said. “The biggest (fire prevention) is parental supervision and watching the children closely. That way, if a small fire does get started, they can put it out quickly.”
Cross said another way to prevent fires is to avoid dry areas.
“Don’t shoot where it’s really dry,” he said. “That could cause problems.”

Phone call leads to physical altercation

Hawkins said shortly after the first altercation, Yoe began arguing with a female, striking her in the face and throwing her to the ground before leaving.
“When officers arrived, they found the female victim with the left side of her face swollen,” he said. “While officers were at that scene, we received a call from the Northside McDonald’s in reference to an injured person there, who turned out to be Yoe.”

Millsap magnificent as rookie

The survey used 10 early Rookie of the Year prospects and evaluated them in four categories that involved formulas to critique every aspect of the game.
Those categories include:
•PPS, points per shot: field goal attempts plus free throw attempts divided by total points scored.
n Hands: average steals plus blocked shots minus avreage turnovers plus personal fouls.
• TD, team dominance: average points, rebounds and assists divided by team averages in the same categories.
Based on these categories, Millsap totaled 37 points to trail Garbajosa’s total of 27.

Dooley looks like a good fit

Dooley brings a tremendous work ethic, passion, discipline and sense of responsibility to the Tech post, one that became vacant for the first time in nearly a decade earlier this month.
He is being assigned the role of helping renew the excitement and interest in Tech’s Western Athletic Conference, NCAA Division 1-A affiliated program.
So far, so good, too.
It wasn’t long after Dooley was introduced to Tech fans and media representatives that university officials reported a huge pickup in season ticket sales.
And the 2007 season is still nearly a year away.

Resolutions clobbered by cupcakes

The resolution list I have compiled is probably not vastly different from that of many of you. However, whereas some of you might be looking to better yourselves, I’m just hoping to sidestep waking up broke, homeless, in prison with bigger, meaner girls or unable to squeeze into the snug workout pants my husband gave me for Christmas.
So here are my resolutions for 2007:
