GSU leader learned from debater

Many times, mentors do not receive the recognition they deserve. Every once in a while, though, the spotlight shines on someone truly worthy and provides the world a glimpse of what makes this person so special.
Such is the case with The Great Debaters, a movie showing here in Ruston and across the country that tells the story of Melvin Tolson and his Wiley College debate team.
In the movie, Denzel Washington stars as Tolson, a poet, professor and politician who mentored many young adults beginning in the 1930s.

Highway work awaits Jury nod

The department is also in line for a new home base, moving from its location near the Lincoln Parish Detention Center to a new location on Fire Training Road.
That work is being done by Pohlman and Wilbanks Steel Buildings of West Monroe, which for $610,000 are building a new shop, side shop, office, break room and restrooms, said Courtney Hall, Police Jury purchasing agent.
Taylor said the parish’s road survey, carried out in October and November every year, was completed on time. The road program’s approval is usually expected at the Jury’s December meeting, he said.

Thanks for shopping here for Christmas

Those who came from outlying areas such as Dubach, Jonesboro and others helped put money into the pockets of local government as well as local business and education by paying sales taxes that will directly impact the bottom line at those vital organizations.
The Tax Incremental Financing District along I-20 is also helping push money into the fund that is driving the construction along the interstate, so increasing local business traffic is in everybody’s best interest.

Patience soon to be rewarded

My friends said the bridge and ramp work was an eyesore and called it a hassle due to the various road closures. And, it’s not only them who are upset. I’ve heard several complaints about congestion and traffic along U.S. 167 and the North Service Road East. People, including myself, complained before road work began, residents complained after road work began and people are still complaining even as much of the project nears completion.

Gallot’s responsibility grows

The House and Governmental Affairs committee will be the first stop on the ethics reform train, Gallot said, but the exact nature of what ethics reform will entail is totally undecided.
“I’m not sure at this point what exactly that means,” Gallot said. “I’m not sure what direction Jindal will take.”
Gallot said advisory groups have been charged with making recommendations to Jindal, but no one has heard word of those recommendations being filed.

Area ministry praised

Throughout the meeting last week, speakers brought to light the work of the ministry, which provides spiritual guidance, vocational training and a routine for those who need to get clean and back on their feet.
One member of the New Living Word church described his continued drug usage following paid stays in rehabilitation facilities and how his experience in the church changed his life for the better. He pointed out how the restoration ministry offered resources to those who could not otherwise afford help.
