Tech tennis team to hit ITA regionals

Three productive fall tournaments have prepared the Louisiana Tech tennis players for the biggest tournament of the season, the ITA Southern Regionals to be played on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday-Monday.
The tournament serves as a regional individual championship and also as a qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Indoors Championships which will be held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. on Nov. 7-10.

Tech soccer to feature ‘Game Day Experience’

Local youth soccer teams and LA Tech Kids Club members are invited to the Louisiana Tech soccer match on Sunday versus Southern Miss at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex for a unique game day experience.
Starting at 12:15 p.m., pre-game talk with head coach Kevin Sherry and his coaching staff will take place leading up to the 1 p.m. kickoff against the Golden Eagles in a Conference USA matchup.
At intermission, kids can participate in a 10-minute soccer game and at the conclusion of the match a post-game clinic with the Lady Techsters players.

Lincoln Parish School Board members were treated to some good news and some not-so-good news during their recent regularly scheduled meeting held midday on Wednesday at Choudrant High School.

Watson appointed as fire chief

At the monthly meeting of the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night, commissioners appointed Donnie Watson as the new interim fire chief until Chief Dennis Ford is able to come back from extended sick leave.
Watson said he served with the Ruston Fire Department for 28 years, and his last six years, he served as fire chief.

King, Queen to be crowned during game

The homecoming game will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Joe Aillet Stadium. Louisiana Tech’s 2013 Homecoming court was announced recently. The king and queen will be named during halftime of Saturday’s football game against North Texas.

‘Doubt, A Parable’ to open at Tech

Another theatrical performance is on tap for Ruston residents.
The Louisiana Tech University’s School of the Performing Arts will put on a production of John Patrick Shanley’s award-winning drama, “Doubt, A Parable.”
Kenneth Robbins will direct the production.
Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and run Oct. 23-26 and Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in Stone Theatre, located in the Howard Center for the Performing Arts on the corner of Adams Boulevard and Dan Reneau Drive.

Lewis Boutique: A piece of Ruston’s history, future

Ruston had simple beginnings: founded by merchants relocating in hopes of the railroad soon to follow. Among these pioneers were W.A.J. Lewis of the mercantile store Kidd and Lewis from the banks of the Ouachita River at Trenton, La.
A wood frame building on Vienna Street in Ruston was the beginning of a local retail icon continuously family-owned and operated since 1863. Lewis Boutique was built on this original location, and is moving into this new millennium with their signature classic style.

Lagniappe: An ‘extra’ hand for your auto needs

The word is out about Ruston’s alternative to the Office of Motor Vehicles.
Lagniappe Auto Title, which opened its doors in February, has already seen numerous repeat customers who need to get auto title work done and get on with their lives. Remember to be cautious

Lincoln Parish has seen several fires recently, some of them severe. One fire earlier this week even resulted in the death of a Ruston resident.
For more than a month this summer, the parish — and much of the state — was under a burn ban. That burn ban was lifted when much-needed rain soaked the parish and lessened the chance of hazard.
However, Lincoln Parish Police Jury President Skip Russell asked that residents remember that fire is still a dangerous tool, even with the ground saturated with water.

History truly amazes me. We walk down the same paths — sit on the same land — as the people before us did. We can look at the books and manuscripts from hundreds of years ago. There is nothing quite like being able to touch and feel history.
