Elizabeth Vidos doesn’t remember life without rhythm.
At age 2, her parents gave her a set of bongo drums. And though Vidos began her formal musical studies on the trumpet, when a roving percussion teacher appeared at her elementary school offering drum lessons, the Morgan City native was hooked.
“So I ended up learning the fundamentals of drumming the summer before fifth grade and never looked back,” Vidos said.

Sheets had shining career after lightbulb came on

in
061916 Ben Sheets C.jpg

Ben Sheets needed that lightbulb moment to realize his full potential.
As early as his freshman season at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, coach Smoke Laval told the young pitcher that he possessed first-round talent.
“His freshman year he was acting like a freshman,” Laval said. “He didn’t know if he belonged or maybe didn’t think he was that good.”
Sheets didn’t realize how good he was and how special he could be until the summer before his junior season when he was invited to Team USA tryouts in Tucson, Ariz. There he saw that his stuff matched up with anyone there.

The changes keep coming for Louisiana Tech’s athletics programs.
And now, months after naming its second women’s head basketball coach over the past three years, and only one year after naming Eric Konkol as new men’s basketball head coach, Tech is searching for a new leader for its baseball program.
That comes after former Bulldogs skipper Greg Goff was announced Friday as the new head baseball coach for the University of Alabama.
Goff led Louisiana Tech to a 42-20 record last season, two years after inheriting a program that won only 15 games in 2014.

A new head coach, but yet another successful season for the men’s basketball program at Louisiana Tech University.
Exit Mike White.
Enter Eric Konkol.
The Bulldogs kept their enthusiastic, loyal fan base applauding their team’s performance with a fourth consecutive season of 20-plus victories.
Konkol, a former University of Miami assistant, directed the ‘Dogs to a 23-10 record and berth in the post season Las Vegas Tournament.

Hot tips for summertime fishing

in
061916 Wobblehead Lure C.jpg

The weather has started to heat up here in the middle of June, and for the bass fisherman, he knows that some of the day’s most exciting and often best action occurs at the break of day.
There is something about being on the water this time of year while all is quiet with a growing glow in the east as he casts a topwater lure next to the trunk of a cypress or willow.

Father's Day made for memories

in
Boatright, T. Scott 14.jpg

I have nothing but good memories surrounding Father’s Day, but that’s because I was fortunate enough to have a great dad.
Thomas Wayne Boatright was born in Farmerville and moved to Ruston with his mother as a young boy.
But he never knew his father. My grandfather George died when my father was still an infant.
Despite, or maybe because of that fact, my dad somehow knew exactly how to be a good father and how much a child needs a father figure in their life.
