Former coach makes history

Reception to be held for Robert Smith Sept. 2

 Robert “Demp” Smith has spent his life overcoming obstacles, blazing trails and working with the youth of Ruston.
The former Lincoln High School and Ruston High School coach will be honored on Sept. 2 on the 40th anniversary of his become the first African American head football coach at RHS.
A reception will be held from 11:30 a.m. — 1:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Lincoln Parish School Board Title 1 Office and later that day will be honored with a halftime plaque presentation during the Ruston High vs. Neville High football game at L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium.

Four indicted in Grambling shooting

Driver indicted in Tech student death

A Lincoln Parish grand jury has indicted four men in connection with the shooting death of a Ruston man outside a Grambling nightclub last April.
In a separate case, grand jurors also indicted the driver of a vehicle in which a Louisiana Tech University student was killed earlier this month.
Word of the grand jury’s action, taken Aug. 12, was released Friday by 3rd Judicial District Attorney John Belton’s office.

Letter jackets banned in RHS classrooms

New rule outlaws coats with pockets

Ruston High School students are no longer allowed to wear letter jackets under terms of a new policy that bars coats with pockets and/or hoods inside the hallways and classrooms on school campus.
The rule is designed to protect the safety of RHS students, school Principal Ricky Durrett said.
School officials are concerned that students might sneak outlawed items into the building in jacket pockets.

Phelps, Bolt, Biles stealing Rio headlines

Every four years, the stars shine on the Summer Olympic Games.
That’s certainly the case with the Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
And especially with a trio of names who will be remembered far into the future.
Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Usain Bolt.
They have attracted rave reviews from Rio and will be forever linked with these Games.
The well of adjectives employed to describe their achievements has long run dry, so any attempt in this corner can be regarded as a journalistic act of futility.

Tech scrimmages for second time

Scrimmages are all about getting better before a season begins, and Louisiana Tech University head football coach Skip Holtz said he felt that mission was accomplished Saturday night at Joe Aillet Stadium.
The Bulldogs closed out the second week of camp with its second scrimmage consisting of 104 snaps.
Holtz said the good thing was that he saw improvement on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Cedar Creek battles Sterlington

STERLINGTON— Sometimes scoring isn’t the main point of a football scrimmage.
Cedar Creek’s offense failed to reach paydirt in a scrimmage at Sterlington Friday night, but that doesn’t mean Cougars head coach Ben Haddox walked away feeling disappointed.

Tolar signes to play at Oklahoma Wesleyan

Tolar recently signed a scholarship to continue his baseball career playing first base and pitcher for Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Techsters to kick off soccer season

Louisiana Tech soccer recently had a case of déjà vu.
In 2012, the season opener was supposed to come against Murray State in Ruston but the match was canceled due to inclement weather. The exact same thing happened this past Friday.
Now Tech will officially kickoff the 2016 season in the state of Texas when it travels on to take on Lamar at 7 p.m. today at the Lamar Soccer Complex.
This will mark the fourth straight year the Lady Techsters open the season away from the home.

’Cats scrimmage against Byrd

SHREVEPORT — The Ruston High School football scrimmaged at Byrd Friday night, with the Yellow Jackets scoring twice and the Bearcats once.
While being outscored, RHS head coach Brad Laird said he was satisfied with what he saw from his Bearcats.
