New school set to open

Private Christian education offered

There’s a new private school in town.
Gracepoint Christian Academy, formed by eight local residents, is expected to open Sept. 4 and serve students in grades k-12.
“We want to offer a fresh option for families in the Ruston area for a Christian education,” said co-founder and Director of Admissions Jill McKee.

Morgan Freeman visits Lincoln Parish

Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman visits with the Health Hut staff during a surprise stop at the mobile medical clinic for the uninsured on Friday. Freeman is a long-time advocate of health-care education and friend of Health Hut founder Dr. Leonel Lacayo. From left, are Lacayo, registered nurse Rita Thompson, Freeman, LPN Jessica Howard, family nurse practitioner Chequan Thomas and LPN Rhona Treadway. Freeman was in Ruston to play golf at Squire Creek Country Club and to jointly celebrate his and Squire Creek developer James Davison’s 75th birthdays.

Playing by pyrotechnic rules

Restrictions placed on fireworks festivities

Watching the sky light up with colorful displays of patterns and shapes from fireworks is just part of some area residents’ annual Fourth of July holiday tradition.
Even with the dry weather and burn ban, parish residents will still be allowed to shoot fireworks in celebration of the holiday.
According to a news release from the Lincoln Parish Fire Department, the discharge of fireworks will be permitted, but they will only be allowed under certain restrictions.

School board to meet at field house

Better interest rate sought to potentially save taxpayer money

The Lincoln Parish School Board members are set to meet Monday in the Jimmy “Chick” Childress Field House for their regular monthly meeting.
A few agenda highlights include a legislative update from area lawmakers, reports on the district’s dropout and truancy, a recognition of former coaches Hoss Garrett and Chick Childress and a recommendation by business manager George Murphy pertaining to refunding of bonds.

Hayes honored by state

Tech star named Female Field Athlete of Year

The Chelsea Hayes success story keeps adding on chapters.
On Saturday, the New Orleans native made another case for being labeled as the best female track and field performer in Louisiana Tech University history.
Hayes was announced as the female Field Athlete of the Year on the All-Louisiana collegiate team announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Pearce, Edwards lead Festival 5K run

Josh Pearce of West Monroe and Ali Edwards of Monroe were the overall male and female winners of the 2012 Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival 5K.
Pearce’s time was 16:57, Edwards was 19:03.
A record-setting 401 runners registered either the 5K or the one-mile fun run/walk that is traditionally held in conjunction with the Festival 5K run:

Every year when the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame has its induction ceremonies in the charming and friendly city of Natchitoches, there’s always some surprises mixed in with the pre-planned events.
Bobby Hebert keeping banquet attendees in stitches with his 15-plus minutes’ worth of wordly views or Hank Aaron being escorted to the now defunct Holiday Inn in a City of Natchitoches police car. No telling what might transpire over the course of the three-day celebration.
