Speech centers on role of African-American women during Reconstruction

Author Mary Farmer-Kaiser speaks to a crowd about African-American women during the Reconstruction era.

Louisiana Tech hosted special speaker Mary Farmer-Kaiser, who spoke on Monday to a crowd at Wyly Tower Auditorium, as a Women’s History Month event.

Farmer-Kaiser is a professor in the Department of History at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette and is the author of the book, “Frustrating Freedom: Freedwomen, Unpardonable Sins, and the Gendered Awakening of Federal Emancipation, 1865-1868.”

The lecture was designed to show that life after Emancipation — or the freeing of slaves in the United States — was very different for African-American women as opposed to men.
