Question: How does a regular person make it these days? With everything costing so much, it is really so hard to save any money. Do only rich people get to retire one day?
Answer: In addressing the answer to this question, last week I promised to examine more closely a strategy nicknamed “Being your own banker.”
The reason we need a strategy like this is that otherwise, all the forces are working against us. It is obviously difficult or distasteful for most people to save money (the national savings rate currently hovers around 0 percent). And it is apparently easy for people to borrow money — and the vast majority pays it back on time and in full.
When asked why she allowed her then-10-year-old daughter to craft a Mohawk out of her hair, singer Jada Pinkett-Smith flatly replied that “girls are constantly reminded ... that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination ... little girls have the right to own themselves ... [and] not be a slave to...what a culture believes a little girl should be.”
This week marked a 13-year low for the oil industry, and while the oil and gas companies seem to be booming in Lincoln Parish, that isn’t the case for the majority of our state or our country.
Most of my family works in some sector of the oil industry — from land rigs and rig movers to drillers and construction of oil and gas plants. So I fully understand that when the oil industry is hurting, many families are hurting, too.
But by that same token, when business is booming and gas prices skyrocket to $4-plus a gallon, if your family isn’t making the big bucks it hurts your pocketbook.
