College presidents react to Supreme Court ruling

The court ruling did emphasize that race should not be the overriding factor in admission, but the court said there is a significant and broad social value from affirmative action and in encouraging harmony in diverse student bodies.

The basic issue before the court was whether admissions policies which give any one racial group an advantage are unconstitutional because they discriminate against other groups.
