Legendary Tigers’ basketball player had role model in Reed

James Jones (center) was congratulated by fellow ex-Tigers’ basketball stars Willis Reed (left) and Aaron James for being among the inductees into the GSU Legends Hall of Fame this past weekend. Jones, who went on to stardom in the now defunct American Basketball Association, was a freshman on the Tigers’ squad when future NBA star Reed was a senior.

GRAMBLING — James Jones made it on his own as one of Grambling State University’s all-time best basketball players.

But the Tallulah native will also be the first to tell you that, had it not been for arguably the greatest hoopster in the school’s history, there’s no way he would have experienced such stardom.

“When I was a freshman at Grambling,” Jones recalled this past weekend, when he was among the 14 inductees into the 2011 class of the GSU Legends Hall of Fame, “Willis Reed took me under his wings and instilled a lot of confidence in me, letting me know that I could succeed at the college level.
