Every summer Haley Norriss visits Ruston to stay with her grandmother.
During these annual trips she and her grandmother, Emily Baugh, make memories that will last a lifetime.

Among the many things that the two of them do together is sew, pick out recipes, and listen to music.

Haley has spent summers in Ruston since she was about 7 and said she enjoys every minute of it.

“I love being here with my grandmother and her teaching me the steps of recipes and showing me just what I need to do,” she said. “We usually pick out a couple recipes to make and I end up taking them home with me once I leave.”

Haley, an Austin resident, and Baugh agreed they hope the summers continue to last for many years to come.

“I love being around my family,” Haley said. “When I was 9 or 10 we started working on my quilt.”

The quilt is made up of drawings of dogs that Haley said she has done all by herself. Now 14, the quilt is finally finished and the duo plan to start another one next summer.
“I got the idea for my quilt one summer and we just sort of started working on it,” she said. “But my grandmother first started showing me how to sew strips together for a quilt when I was 6 or 7 years old.”

Baugh added that it is great to see Haley work with her hands both sewing and in the kitchen.

“(The Peach Bowl Delight) recipe really is good,” Haley said. “Right before the Peach Festival, we made a coconut cake and it was really delicious. So when my grandmother asked if I wanted to enter the Peach Cookery Contest it was pretty easy to decide what recipe to use.”

Haley said she changed out the coconut for peaches and added in the almond flavoring to make it even better.

“My grandmother got the recipe from a friend of hers a long time ago,” she said. “This was the first year I entered the contest and it was a lot of fun. I plan to do it again next year, if I’m here at the right time.”

There are a few tricks to the recipe, Haley said but they aren’t anything major. She added that certain things needed be done at certain times

“You could make the cake in the morning and wait until that night for dinner to actually serve it,” Haley said. “The average person only sleeps eight hours at night so if you waited all day it would be pretty much the same. Also, everything is about timing. You have to put it on at just the right time because milk burns very easily.”
