While many people think of Labor Day as an excuse to grill, miss work and stop wearing white, very few people take the time to understand the importance of the federal holiday.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor website, Labor Day was “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.”
The DOL states this tradition started when the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882 in New York in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.
