Church to host hymn festival
The words “Fifth Sunday” used to mean one thing in the South: a “singing” with “dinner on the grounds.”
A Ruston church is seeking to revive that heritage with a Fifth Sunday Hymn Festival at 2 p.m. Oct. 30. There will be a covered-dish lunch at noon, and all are invited to the meal as well as to the hymn festival.
“From the beginning of Christianity, believers sang hymns,” says John Allen Bankson, pastor of John Knox Presbyterian Church. “A hymn is first a poem. It must have content so it can stand on its own as literature.”
