The television was filled with the images of men and women in battle dress uniforms, driving Humvees throughout the devastated areas of New Orleans, bringing people to safety and arresting those who were committing crimes.

We should also remember that many of the National Guard members who were sent to New Orleans to help our state recover had recently returned from tours of duty in both Afghanistan and Iraq. They thought that by coming home, the days when they worried about whether someone was going to shoot at them were over. Instead, they were sent back into the line of fire — at home.
