Texas experiment visits Ruston
The Lincoln Parish Game Warden and a Ruston land owner were on hand on Dec. 9 to help a group of middle schoolers recover a High Altitude Research Photography Operation (HARPO) that was part of a school project.
The project named Bears In the Sky (BITS) was a months-long project of Timpson Middle School located in the deep East Texas town of Timpson.
The project involved launching HARPO using two large weather balloons filled with helium. Attached to the balloon was a box (HARPO) that contained a camera, cell phone, a GPS tracking device and several science experiments. The students launched HARPO at approximately 10:10 p.m. Dec. 7. They received a message via the GPS tracker and cell phone that gave its location with latitude and longitude. Students determined from this information that the device had floated over the Shreveport area and landed in a tree in Ruston at about 2:20 p.m. approximately 150 miles from Timpson.
