The United States of America was founded on the idea that the sovereign individual is the basic unit of this new country as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. This new idea of individual rights and freedom is based on the Judeo-Christian tradition and Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, i.e. capitalism. The Jewish tradition states that God created man in his own image and, as such, has intrinsic value and that each individual is responsible for his own unique relationship to God.  The Christian tradition goes further, stating that each individual is responsible for his own salvation — whether to accept Christ as his personal savior or not.
