Pictured above are Capt. Darren Thomas, 1st Cavalry 3rd Brigade Division, and Gen. Austin, the United States Forces-Iraq Commander. This picture was taken in Iraq on Dec. 17, just before the final convoy from Iraq to Kuwait. Gen. Austin is a four star general and was the commander over the Iraq war.

North Louisiana native Capt. Darren J. Thomas was among the last hundred soldiers to depart from Iraq and to end the conflict.

Before dawn on March 20, 2003, there was an airstrike in southern Bagdad that was the start of a long war. Among those first soldiers to enter the battlefield was Thomas.

Since 2003, Capt. Thomas has left his wife and children behind to endure three additional deployments to various regions of Iraq. Capt. Thomas is the son-in-law of Grambling resident Gloria Rabon.
