Rationalizing holiday eating
Quite a number of years ago, as the New Year’s holiday approached, one of my children overheard a conversation among some adults. The topic was the type or number of resolutions that we might — or might not — adopt.
I had no idea that my son was listening, so I was mildly surprised when he asked me later: “Daddy, what is a New Year’s revolution?” I asked him to repeat the question, and again he said “revolution.” My first reaction was to correct the misstated word, but upon reflection I decided it was not so important. It later occurred to me that the malapropism was actually not so inaccurate.
