Ninety-three years ago, on this exact day, Congress passed the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes.”

It wasn’t until 1933 that Congress would pass the 21st Amendment repealing the 18th.

During those 14 years, there were Americans who still made and transported their own alcohol — moonshine — illegally. And there were those Americans who still purchased it even though still illegal, or who wanted something to drink so badly they would drive north or south of the United States border to Canada or to Mexico to get their fix.
