Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of Sunday features running in February in recognition of Black History Month.

Cynthia Jones knew from the time she was a little girl that she wanted to be a doctor.
This was despite the fact that she was unaware of anyone like herself who had followed this path.

“There were no black or female role models on television for doctors,” the Michigan native said. “But I was always interested in helping people feel better.”
