Longtime Grambling State University athletics’ fan Thelma Williams helped celebrate the Tigers’ 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship with Head Coach Doug Williams (left) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Shell earlier this week. The G-Men were recognized for their rags-to-riches march to a league title. Shell was the guest speaker at the event held at the Favrot Student Union on the GSU campus. For Thelma Williams, it was a good way to celebrate her recent 87th birthday.

Asked once about why Lincoln Parish universities have turned out so many players for the professional footall ranks through the years, former Grambling State University star Doug Wililams deadpanned:

“It’s probably something in the water.”

Well, that “water” has flowed with plenty of talent for too many years to count and particularly for supplying representatives in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
