Lopez reflects on military career as a woman soldier

National Guard Spc. Jessica Lopez has been serving the country since she had to drop out of school to care for her ill mother.

After graduating high school, the farthest thing from Spc. Jessica Lopez’s mind was the military.

“I always thought that only crazy people joined the military,” she said. “I never imagined that I would join the military, but that all changed.”

Once she had graduated high school and began college, Lopez said it wasn’t long before her mother became ill. The oldest of seven children, Lopez was forced to drop out of school and return home to New Orleans to help care for her mother.
