With last week’s legislative approval of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s historic education makeover, public schools as Louisiana now knows them may soon be gone forever.

Not since 1928 when Huey Long pushed through a bill providing free textbooks for every student have changes been so sweeping. The new laws expand charter schools, make it harder for teachers to gain job protection, diminish the power of local school boards and establish a statewide private-school voucher plan paid for out of the public school funding formula.
