Dealing with desegregation
Desegregation hit Lincoln Parish public schools full force my sophomore year at Ruston High. Before that was freedom of choice, the name given to plans developed nationwide in 1965-1970 that were aimed at integrating schools in basically segregated systems.
The idea was simple: Students could choose where they wanted to go to school, regardless of their race or the racial makeup of the school. But most schools remained segregated, including those in Lincoln Parish.
