Blueberry crops mature early

Area blueberry growers are discovering the fruit will be ready a little earlier this year.

Robert Alexander, owner of Pops Blueberry Patch, said blueberries typically mature and are ripe for the picking around June 1 in North Louisiana.

“This year they are running two to three weeks early due to the weather,” said Alexander, whose patch north of Ruston is made up of about eight acres of blueberries.
