Merger failed due to politics

Despite the recommendations of higher education consultants, multiple chambers of commerce from the Ruston, Bossier and Shreveport areas and groups dedicated to the betterment of Louisiana, the push for the merger of Louisiana State University at Shreveport into Louisiana Tech University ultimately fell victim to the world of politics.

House Bill 964, which would have merged LSU-S into Tech, creating one singular Tech university with two campuses, needed a two-thirds vote from both the Louisiana House and Senate to merge the two schools. But on Tuesday, Rep. Jim Fannin, the author of the bill, decided to scrap it based on a lack of support.
