In his time, there wasn’t a righthander — or lefthander, for that matter — who was more intimidating to major league hitters.

Simply put, James Rodney Richard was flatout scary to any batter that stepped into the box during the late 1970s.

It wasn’t just because he had a Mt. Everest presence, standing 6-8.

It was also because he made radar guns work overtime and blink twice at the MPH’s he was clocking.

Big J.R. was fastball cool long before ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” made seemingly every 90-plus miles’ per hour chunker a highlight film.
