It’s pool time, or lake or river time, depending on your particular fondness of a specific body of water. However, while taking a dip to get a moment’s relief from the hot Louisiana sun is essential at times, it can turn disastrous if safety precautions are ignored.

According to the American Red Cross, home pool drowning is the leading cause of death for children younger than 5. Although children should never be left unattended in a swimming pool or hot tub, there are also other precautions the Red Cross recommends:

• Keep water clear and pool free of debris.
