Those words — spoken by a hero — held A.E. Phillips Elementary School students spellbound during a veterans ceremony Wednesday afternoon in the school's auditorium.
Marine Sgt. Randall Rugg, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, related his story to highlight the festivities.
Four days into the war, the Monroe native was wounded when the tank recovery vehicle he was riding in was struck by five rocket propelled grenades.
"I blinked once, and then my life changed forever," Rugg told the students.
