Fire ants are a problem again this year. One reader told me that they were especially bad around his okra and inquired what would be safe to use and not harm his other crops.

A very safe material that has a recommendation for more than 200 fruits and vegetables is ESTEEM.

It is bait that the ants carry back to their hills. It is an insect growth regulator, so it is very safe around humans and animals.

Check for the active ingredient Pyripoxifen. I understand that there are some additional products that have the same active ingredient. They should also be safe to use.
