Employees of Mitcham Farms pick peaches. Joe Mitcham said the fewer chill hours have resulted in smaller, sweeter and fewer peaches.

Local growers say the lack of a strong winter might put a dent in the peach crop this year.

Peach farmers in the area are busy making sure they’ll have plenty of peaches for the 2012 Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival, but the weather has not been on their side this year.

Joe Mitcham, of Mitcham Farms, said the decreased number of chill hours has led to smaller, sweeter and fewer peaches.
