Question: My mother is in her late 60’s and very healthy. My father died a few years ago. She and I are very close and I have told her repeatedly that I would never let her go into a nursing home. Even so, she is considering buying long-term care insurance. Is this really something she needs?

Answer: If you can guarantee Mom that she’ll be healthy until the day she dies and that nothing will ever, ever happen to you, then tell her to skip the long-term care insurance.
