Growing up in Louisiana — a state that is definitely known for its passion for football — I have seen the cliché of “football first,” in more than quite a few instances in my life.

I first noticed that the great game on the gridiron took precedence over other things like academics when I was in elementary school.

The schools with the better athletic teams in my parish got better equipment than others — better may not be the best term as some schools had video boards that showed replays during the games while others had damaged lights and scoreboards and radio speakers that could barely be heard.
