Doves help start hunting season

This mourning dove, photographed by this writer’s granddaughter, was safe as it chose to join a dozen or so others feasting on bird seed in the writer’s yard rather than the dove field he hunted on opening day.

To be honest, it’s a misnomer to call it dove “hunting”. There’s no hunting involved.
The Saturday before Labor Day each year is something like a social gathering for camo-clad folks with shotguns who want to shake the dust and rust from not having anything to hunt since turkey season ended back in April.

If you’re lucky, you get invited by a property owner who has legally prepared a field to attract doves.
