Former sheriff sentenced
United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced that former sheriff Royce Edward Toney, 64, of Monroe, was sentenced Tuesday to six months home confinement, four years of supervised release and a $15,000 fine. Toney pleaded guilty on Aug. 2 to eight counts of fraud and related activity in connection with computers.
Provisions of the plea agreement provide that Toney will not be employed again in any capacity in law enforcement. Toney was elected sheriff on Oct. 20, 2007, and took office on July 1, 2008. He did not seek re-election.
