RHS trio puts names on scholarships

Staff Report

Three Ruston High School student-athletes signed national letters-of-intent in three different sports on Wednesday, the National Signing Day for NCAA-bound performers.
Mitchell Haddox inked a golf scholarship with Louisiana Tech University, Jamaya Burr signed on for boys’ basketball with McNeese State University and Kendall Smith put her signature on a scholarship to play softball at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Haddox was a Class 4A Louisiana High School Athletic Association regional champ in 2010, a regional runner-up in 2011 and a Top 12 finisher at the 5A regional and state tournaments and the medalist for the 4-Area tournament this year.
Burr is a 5-11 guard who was an honorable mention All-District selection as a sophomore and first unit All-District 2-5A pick and All-Area choice as a junior.
Smith will follow in the footsteps of her sister, former RHS standout Katie Smith, to the nationally prominent Louisiana-Lafayette program. She was an All-State 5A and All-District 2-5A pick this year after having been All-Area in both 2011 and 2012.
BULLDOGS’ SIGNEES: Head coach Michael White of Louisiana Tech University’s basketball Bulldogs officially announced on Wednesday the signings of guard Dominic Jackson of Sunset and forward Leo Edwards of Detroit, Mich.
Jackson is a 6-foot-3, 165-pound shooting guard out of Beau Chene HS in the Lafayette area. Last season for his junior year, he led the runner-up district champion Gators to a 21-win season and a second round playoff appearance in Class 4A while averaging 25 points, six rebounds and five steals per game.

As a junior, he received all-district honors while also being named first team Class 4A all-state.
“(Dominic) possesses the speed, quickness and stroke to be an ideal shooting guard for us,” said White. “He’s a very competitive defender as well.”
