Quarterback C.J. Gatlin (2) hands off to running back Alexio Williams-Hargrove for Ruston High School, with a 27-18 loss to Monroe Ouachita High School at L. J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium at James Field in the regional round of the Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Ruston High didn’t just quietly tip-toe out of the Class 5A regional round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs on Friday night.

Nor did they finish their 2012 season with a whimper.

The No. 25-seeded Bearcats (6-6) gave the No. 9-seeded and No. 6 Louisiana Sports Writers Association-listed Lions (10-2) of Ouachita High a gritty battle right down to the final quarter on a chilly evening at L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium at James Field.

After falling behind 9-0, Ruston raced back to lead twice (10-9, 18-15) twice in the final half before losing 27-18.
