Since its first diagnosis in 1981, HIV/AIDS has reached epidemic numbers. Due to the threat of this global killer, the first World AIDS Day was held in 1988 to show support for those living with HIV and AIDS and to commemorate those who have died. We currently observe this day every year on Dec. 1.

As most know, HIV weakens the human immune system to the point of “deficient,” which can result in AIDS. Individuals contract AIDS either through sexual contact, pregnancy, childbirth, breast-feeding, injection drug use, occupational exposure, blood transfusion and organ transplant.
