People who stutter frequently face challenges in communication, and consequently might shy away from social situations.

“It’s a frustrating thing because they know what they want to say but feel people don’t take them seriously in a conversation or think they don’t know what they are talking about,” said Christy Madix, an assistant professor and clinical services coordinator at Louisiana Tech Speech and Hearing Center, which works with individuals who have communication disorders. “A lot of times people think it is a controllable thing, and it is not in all circumstances.”
