Coaching career comes to close for Ruston High grid leader

Photo by NANCY BERGERON After nearly 40 years in the profession, Billy Laird announcement his retirement as head football coach at Ruston High School. The Shreveport Woodlawn High and Louisiana Tech University graduate will remain on as the full-time athletics’ director for the Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association program.

Yes, no, yes, no.

Ever since the 2012 football season had ended at Ruston High School, those two words have flip-flopped with a decision that Billy Laird knew one day he would have to make.
It was a decision that anyone has had to cope with after remaining and being loyal to one profession for so many years.

Yes, I’ll stay.

No, I’ll move on to another stage of my life.

“For the last three weeks or so, I’ve gone back with the ‘yeahs’ and ‘nos’,” Laird said as he sat in Principal Mike Milstead’s office at RHS late Thursday morning.
