Alan Bert Hartwell, 71, of Dubach, LA, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Shreveport, LA after a brief illness.

Alan was born on September 7, 1941 in Attleboro, Massachusetts to Cora and Hilbert Hartwell.  At the young age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force and served his military career stationed throughout different bases in the United States, Europe, and Vietnam.  He met the love of his life, Carol West in Germany and they married on December 14, 1962.  Master Sergeant Alan Hartwell retired from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1978.  After his retirement from the Air Force he moved his family to Dubach, Louisiana.   As a devoted husband and father he cherished time spent with his family.  His hobbies included hunting, traveling, and antiquing.  He liked researching and planning trips to explore the many wonders of the United States.  He enjoyed these travels each spring and fall while accompanied by his wife and sometimes even his children and their families.  In addition to traveling, he looked forward to deer season each year and hunting with his two sons and other family members.   

Alan is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Carol Hartwell; his son David Hartwell and wife JoAnn; daughter, Sue Barfield and husband, Russell; son Jimmy Hartwell and wife Melissa.  He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Martha, Abi, and Jon Hartwell; Garrett and Caroline Barfield; and Harrison Hartwell all of Dubach, Louisiana.  Other survivors include his sister Susan Woodard of Florida, brother, Gene Clifford of Pennsylvania, brother Phillip Hartwell of California, and sister Ginny Floeter of Vermont. 

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Clifford and Hilbert Hartwell, and brothers Jon Hartwell and Billy Clifford.

Visitation will be at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston on Wednesday, January 16, from 5:00-7:00 pm.  A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 17, at 10:00 A.M. at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach with interment to follow at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel.
